Iwa Rere and Art
Art holds the potency to render the unseen, visible, the unuttered, voiced, the injured, reparative opportunities. Artists express the character, realities, and potentials of a people. As an artist I feel compelled by an inner calling of character to examine both self and society, to name my lens of perception, my truths, my sensibilities, my outrages against injustices, my awe of beauty, and to accept agency, and attendant responsibility to express them as visual subjects.
My work is about art as an expression of individual and collective consciousness. In states of elegance, my images amplify what harms and heals the universal mysteries and struggles of the soul and epistemic realities.
I work in thematic series that arise from deeply felt intra-psychic, cosmological and socio-political issues. Working in series affords me opportunities to artistically examine my relationships with both the presenting subjects, and iwa rere… how I choose to walk the journey in divine character.
The beatific and haunting images, I hope, speak a tongue my ancestors recognize, and a truth that centers me on a path, claiming the totality of my own breath, footprints, and cosmological authenticity.
